Seven-story Upper East Side fire contained; three-alarm blaze on roof limited to top levels

A large fire that broke out on the roof of a seven-story apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has been contained, fire officials said Friday. The blaze occurred on East 95th Street between Second and First Avenues. The initial call came in shortly after 10 a.m., and responders arrived within about four minutes.

Flames spread to the cockloft—the space between the top-floor ceiling and the roof—and to three penthouses on the top floor. The fire did not reach neighboring buildings. About 170 firefighters and EMS personnel were on scene. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries; the exact nature of those injuries was not immediately clear.

Video shared on the Citizen app showed flames leaping from the roof with thick black smoke rising over the skyline. The fire department confirmed the incident as a three-alarm fire. The cause remains under investigation.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management advised people to avoid the area, and residents who are sensitive to smoke were encouraged to close their windows. The Red Cross also responded to the scene to assist.

Additional notes and context:
– The quick response likely helped contain the spread to the top floors and prevented ignition of adjacent buildings.
– No civilian injuries were reported in the brief on-scene update.
– The investigation will focus on the origin and cause, with updates anticipated as firefighters complete their search and assessment.
