A 64-year-old man from Maryland, Seth Jason, has been arrested for making a series of threatening calls to the Georgia offices of Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Accused of issuing multiple violent threats against Greene and her family, Jason faces a four-count indictment detailing these alleged acts that took place between October 2023 and January 2025.
The threats were reportedly made from phone lines linked to Voice of America’s studios in Washington, where Jason previously worked. Notably, he also had a history of serving as a reserve officer with the Anne Arundel County Police Department since 2016, though the department clarified that such officers are unarmed and lack police authority. Jason is no longer associated with the police force.
The charges include influencing a federal official by threat, targeting a family member of a federal official, interstate communications with threats to kidnap or injure, and anonymous telecommunications harassment. He was expected to appear in court for the first time on Thursday.
Acting U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro expressed serious concern over the threats directed at public officials, emphasizing that “No one should have to live their life looking over their shoulder every day.” This incident reflects a troubling trend of escalating threats against Congress members, a phenomenon that has intensified in an increasingly polarized political climate. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan reiterated that threats must be confronted head-on, especially in the wake of violent incidents involving public officials.
The focus on accountability in these instances highlights a critical need for safety among those serving in public office, reinforcing the importance of protecting democratic institutions amidst rising tensions.
