Klay Thompson made a stunning debut with the Dallas Mavericks, scoring 22 points and sinking six 3-pointers in their season-opening victory against the San Antonio Spurs, which ended 120-109. Following the game, Thompson entertained reporters by folding his box score into a paper airplane, a fun ritual from his 13 years with the Golden State Warriors.
In just 26 minutes of play, Thompson showcased his shooting skills, going 7-of-13 from the field and breaking the franchise record for 3-pointers made in a Mavericks debut. His performance also included seven rebounds and three steals.
Mavericks star Luka Doncic praised Thompson’s impactful game, highlighting his ability to score and play strong defense. Doncic himself had a solid performance with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists, despite feeling “rusty” after missing the preseason due to a left calf contusion.
This game marked the first official matchup between Doncic and Thompson, who showed immediate chemistry. Doncic assisted on four of Thompson’s baskets, underscoring the easy dynamic of playing alongside a top-tier shooter.
Thompson expressed admiration for Doncic, noting his unique ability to play at his own speed, which transcends traditional basketball training. Thompson noted that being able to receive great passes from Doncic significantly enhances his scoring opportunities.
One of Thompson’s four 3-pointers came in the fourth quarter when he was so open he had time to dribble before shooting, prompting a big smile from Doncic as he jogged back on defense.
Thompson admitted he felt nervous before the game, especially in his first official outing with the Mavericks. He settled in after making an early jumper off a pass from Doncic.
Reflecting on his debut, Thompson stated, “Great debut. It’s only one game in October, but it feels good just to get that first one out of the way.”
