Klay Thompson had an impressive debut with the Dallas Mavericks, scoring 22 points and making six 3-pointers in a 120-109 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Following the game, Thompson folded the box score into a paper airplane, a tradition he maintained from his time with the Golden State Warriors. He tossed the airplane across the room and remarked on its flight, joking, “It’s like an F-16.”
In his 26 minutes on the court, Thompson shot 7-of-13 overall and 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, setting a record for the most 3-pointers in a Mavericks debut. He also contributed by grabbing seven rebounds and recording three steals.
Mavericks star Luka Doncic praised Thompson’s performance, saying, “He was great… just knocking down a lot of shots and he was moving out there. He played great defense, too.” Doncic himself had a strong showing despite feeling “rusty” after missing the preseason due to a calf injury, finishing the game with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists.
This game marked the first official matchup between Doncic and Thompson outside of practice, and their chemistry was apparent as Doncic assisted on four of Thompson’s shots. Doncic expressed enthusiasm about playing alongside Thompson, noting the ease with which they collaborated on the court.
Thompson, who joined the Mavericks in free agency partly to play with Doncic, complimented the young star’s unique playing style, saying, “What an incredible talent… he plays at his own speed and manipulates the game as good as I’ve ever seen.”
In a highlight moment, Thompson had such a clear look at the basket after setting a screen that he was able to take a dribble before shooting. Doncic confidently returned to defense after the pass, confident Thompson would score.
Despite feeling nervous before the game, Thompson settled into his role after making an early jumper. He described his debut as “great,” noting the excitement of starting this new chapter in his career.
