Prime Video has decided to cancel “The Wheel of Time,” ending the fantasy drama after three seasons, according to sources. This confirmation comes just five weeks after the premiere of the Season 3 finale on the platform.

The series, adapted from Robert Jordan’s acclaimed fantasy novels, saw a decline in viewership during its latest season, ultimately leading to the decision not to pursue a fourth season. Prime Video and Sony TV collaborated in attempts to bolster the viewership numbers, but they ultimately fell short.

“The Wheel of Time” follows Rand a’Thor, portrayed by Josha Stradowski, a humble farm boy destined to be The Dragon Reborn—a pivotal character in the saga who plays a crucial role in the battle between light and darkness. The third season, which drew heavily from the fourth book “The Shadow Rising,” escalated the series’ conflicts, showcasing a divided White Tower and the relentless pursuit of Rand by his enemies, particularly Lanfear, a character whose complex relationship with him complicates the fight between good and evil.

The cast included not only Stradowski and Natasha O’Keeffe, but also prominent figures like Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, and Daniel Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran, among others. The show was led by showrunner Rafe Judkins, who contributed significantly to the adaptation alongside an executive team that included Pike and several industry veterans.

While the cancellation is disappointing for fans, it serves as a reminder that adaptations of beloved literary works can face challenges in translating to screen. The series did manage to capture the attention of fantasy fans during its run, and its rich storytelling may encourage renewed interest in the original book series as viewers revisit the source material.
