His journey in music began with early performances at St. Luke’s Anglican Church and even at a family funeral home. This laid the groundwork for a career that saw him join Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks between 1961 and 1963, a vibrant rockabilly and rhythm-and-blues group that featured future members of the Band, three of whom hailed from Canada, with Mr. Helm originating from Arkansas.
Mr. Hudson, a pivotal figure in this transition, initially hesitated to join the Hawks. However, his parents’ concerns about their son pursuing rock music were alleviated when he was offered a new organ, a pay bump of an extra $10 a week for giving lessons, and the title of “music consultant.”
The Hawks later embarked on their own tours before becoming the backing band for Bob Dylan during his influential 1965 and 1966 folk-rock tours. They ultimately settled in Woodstock, where their collaborations with Dylan became legendary. Embracing their cohesive talent, the five musicians decided to name themselves “the Band.”
In 1968, the Band released their debut album, “Music From Big Pink,” followed by their self-titled album in 1969. Their unique blend of rock, rhythm & blues, and country music garnered significant acclaim. Mr. Hudson was crucial in crafting the Band’s sound, drawing inspiration from composers like Aaron Copland and Charles Ives, while his distinct appearance—marked by a dark beard—conveyed an aura of earnest artistry rather than typical rock stardom.
