In recent years, alcohol collectors have spent upwards of a million dollars at auctions and private sales, acquiring highly sought-after bottles of liquor and wine.
Last January, Vietnamese collector Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan spent over $2 million on a rare bottle of cognac in a private sale. This isn’t Viet’s first extravagant alcohol purchase; his spirits collection is estimated to be worth more than $190 million, according to the Guardian.
While many people can enjoy a bottle of wine or liquor for under $100, connoisseurs and collectors view high-end alcohol as an investment akin to fine art or luxury cars. This is particularly true for whiskey and wine, both known to improve with age.
