The Secret History Behind America’s Favorite Side Dish

French fries are among America’s most beloved side dishes.

The origins of these fried potato strips can be traced back to Belgium and France for different reasons. Some believe that American soldiers encountered French fries for the first time while stationed in Belgium during World War I. Others argue that the dish gained popularity after Thomas Jefferson requested them to be served at a White House dinner in a “French manner.”

Over time, French fries have gained tremendous popularity, becoming one of America’s favorite dishes. In 2022, fast food chain Checkers and Rally initiated a petition to move National French Fry Day from July 13 to the second Friday in July, so it would land on a “Fry Day.”

These efforts bring us to today: National French Fry Day. We’ve compiled a list of chains offering “Fry Day” deals.

Notably, some chains like McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King are offering free fries for the rest of 2024.

So let’s dive in, enjoy the deals, and bon appétit!
