Dining out in New York has become increasingly challenging, with securing a reservation at the city’s most sought-after restaurants reaching unprecedented levels of difficulty over the past three years. For food enthusiasts, what was once merely a hurdle has now become a seemingly insurmountable barrier.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, stated that certain restaurants have become nearly impossible to access. Despite his discussions with restaurateurs about tips for securing reservations, many have admitted they have no advice to offer.

The intense competition for dinner bookings prompted the New York state legislature to enact a ban on third-party booking websites like Appointment Trader, which allowed users to sell their restaurant reservations for exorbitant prices, sometimes as high as $200. This practice, likened to scalping tickets for concerts and sporting events, has raised concerns within the hospitality industry.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the new legislation as a significant win for the restaurant sector. She argued that it will help level the playing field for reservations and safeguard restaurants against costly cancelations.

However, despite these legislative efforts, the ongoing demand for unique and upscale experiences still surpasses available options. Jaclyn Sienna India, a travel advisor with extensive experience in the concierge service for affluent clients, noted that in the post-COVID climate, every venue is at capacity.

India, who has built her reputation catering to families with substantial financial means, emphasized that gaining access to premier dining spots hinges on understanding client preferences and fostering relationships with restaurant managers.

She observed a notable shift in consumer dining habits, with fewer clients expressing interest in formal tasting menus. Instead, there is a growing inclination towards trendy venues where the experience revolves more around social status rather than just cuisine. This change reflects a culture of “FOMO”—the fear of missing out—and the desire to showcase exclusivity.
