The nostalgia for early-2000s films continues as The Princess Diaries is set to receive a long-awaited third installment. This announcement follows recent news about sequels for Freaky Friday and The Devil Wears Prada. More than two decades after The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement released in 2004 and the original film debuted in 2001, The Princess Diaries 3 is officially in the works.
Adele Lim, known for writing Disney’s animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon and the hit film Crazy Rich Asians, will direct the new project. Lim expressed her excitement, stating, “As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.” She emphasized the film’s themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship that will resonate with audiences around the globe.
Anne Hathaway, who starred as Mia Thermopolis in the original films, confirmed her return on Instagram, saying, “Back to Genovia,” and sharing a quote from the earlier movies, noting, “The fairytale continues.”
The previous films, both adaptations of Meg Cabot’s novels, were directed by the late Garry Marshall. The story follows Mia, a teenager who discovers she is the heir to the fictional European kingdom of Genovia, with guidance from her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, portrayed by Julie Andrews.
With Lim officially announced as the director, The Princess Diaries 3 appears to be progressing after a long period of speculation. It was reported in 2022 that screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji, known for her work on Supergirl and Quantum Leap, was involved in developing the script. Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two films, is also returning as an executive producer, alongside Lim’s producing partners.
During a recent interview with New York Times Magazine, Hathaway confirmed that discussions are indeed taking place regarding The Princess Diaries 3, stating simply, “Yep,” while holding back further details.
Hathaway has previously expressed her deep connection to the franchise, sharing that the film significantly impacted her life. She grew emotional reminiscing about the original movie, noting how it has grown in importance as her career has evolved.
