The Miz has opened up about the missed opportunity to face John Cena during the wrestling legend’s retirement run. In a recent appearance on the SI Media podcast, The Miz reflected on a moment shared with Cena during a Raw event at Barclays Center in April 2024, revealing he never anticipated that match would serve as their final encounter.
“Literally two years ago, I was in the ring… tagging with him, which kind of brought everything full circle. I didn’t think that would be my last match with John Cena, but I guess it will be. It’s a little upsetting,” The Miz expressed.
Despite the disappointment of not competing against Cena one final time, The Miz explained that he was among the first to express interest in a match following Cena’s announcement of his retirement tour. Unfortunately, the potential bout was derailed by unforeseen circumstances that are common in the wrestling industry.
“It’s not even that it was shot down. There were instances where it could have happened, right? And things happen in this industry that nobody really knows about — and you don’t need to know about. There was a moment where it could have happened, and then that moment went away because of certain circumstances, and it never came back,” he said.
Remaining optimistic, The Miz reassured fans that he does not harbor any anger over the situation. Seasoned in the WWE landscape, he emphasized the importance of adapting and making the most of any opportunity that arises.
As the wrestling world continues to buzz, Gunther has promised to challenge Cena’s legacy at the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event, potentially leading to new exciting storylines and rivalries in the WWE. The Miz’s reflections and the evolving narratives surrounding Cena’s retirement offer fans a glimpse into the unpredictable nature of professional wrestling. This unpredictability, filled with hope for future matchups and rivalries, keeps the audience engaged and eager for what lies ahead.
