The Curious History of French Fries in America

French fries are one of America’s most beloved side dishes.

The origin of these crispy delights is linked to Belgium and France for different reasons. Some believe that American soldiers first encountered French fries while stationed in Belgium during World War I. Others claim that Thomas Jefferson popularized fried potato strips in the U.S. after requesting they be served in a “French manner” at a White House dinner.

Since then, French fries have risen to fame and become one of the most popular American dishes. In 2022, fast food chain Checkers and Rally’s spearheaded an effort to change National French Fry Day from July 13 to the second Friday in July, a day cleverly referred to as “Fry Day.”

Today, we celebrate National French Fry Day. Various chains are offering special deals to mark the occasion.

Notably, chains such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King are offering free fries for the remainder of 2024.

Enjoy these deals, and bon appétit!
