The Chicks Harmonize National Pride at DNC 2024

The Chicks took to the stage at the 2024 Democratic National Convention on August 22 to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner,” marking the conclusion of the event at Chicago’s United Center. The audience was eager to hear from Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who was set to address them shortly.

The trio, composed of Natalie Maines and sisters Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, was introduced as the “biggest-selling U.S. female group of all time” and winners of 13 Grammy Awards. Dressed in understated gray and black outfits, they delivered an impressive a cappella rendition of the national anthem, showcasing their signature intricate harmonies, before leaving the stage with smiles and waves.

Earlier in the day, they promoted their performance on their X account, urging followers to “Use your voice. Use your vote.”

This was not The Chicks’ first performance at a Democratic National Convention; they previously sang the national anthem during the virtual DNC in 2020, expressing support for President Biden. During that performance, they harmonized beautifully from a three-way split screen.

The Chicks have a long history with political controversy, dating back to 2003 when they, then known as the Dixie Chicks, faced backlash from conservatives after Maines expressed her shame for being from the same state as then-President George W. Bush over the Iraq War. This led to a significant backlash, including radio stations pulling their music, and a withdrawal from the country music scene. They released the poignant song “Not Ready to Make Nice” in 2006, which won the Grammy for song and record of the year in 2007. Despite regularly touring, the group did not release a new album until 2020’s Gaslighter.

The convention showcased various artists from the country and Americana genres throughout the week, with performances by Mickey Guyton and Jason Isbell on the first night and Maren Morris on the third night.
