Thanksgiving Travel Chaos: Are You Prepared for the Storm?

As Thanksgiving approaches, travel activity is ramping up, with millions heading out to celebrate the holiday. Most travelers should reach their destinations smoothly; however, challenges may arise for those returning home, particularly in the eastern United States and the Northeast region.

The FOX Forecast Center is actively tracking weather patterns that could disrupt travel. As the workweek starts, a storm is already bringing heavy rain and mountain snow to the West, with another system affecting the Upper Midwest. This same system is expected to bring rain to the Southeast and Northeast ahead of a more significant weather event expected on Thanksgiving Day.

On Thanksgiving Day, a storm is anticipated to create last-minute travel difficulties that could extend into Black Friday and the weekend. An area of low pressure is projected to move from the Midwest into the Northeast, where cold enough air may cause snow accumulation, especially across the interior Northeast. Snow is likely to impact regions from Iowa to Maine, with upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and parts of Maine expected to see the most significant snowfall. Travelers using Interstate 81 and 90 in New York should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions in cities like Syracuse and Buffalo.

While the North braces for winter weather, the southern U.S. may face heavy rain and severe thunderstorms, particularly in the Tennessee Valley and Southeast. Travelers taking to the roads should expect delays, especially in areas affected by adverse weather. Major airports along the way, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, are also anticipated to experience delays and cancellations due to weather impacts.

Additionally, this pre-Thanksgiving storm might initiate the lake-effect snow season across the Midwest and the Great Lakes, with temperatures expected to plummet and potentially lead to significant snowfall events in the areas near the lakes.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions by downloading weather apps and enabling notifications for real-time updates. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, many can still look forward to a festive Thanksgiving, with opportunities to enjoy the holiday spirit upon arrival at their destinations.
