The 11th annual 5k Turkey Trot in Olivette, Missouri, was an extraordinary event, drawing thousands of participants on Thanksgiving Day to support a noble cause. Since its inception, the Turkey Trot has successfully raised $119,000 for the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry, helping meet community needs.
Mayor Missy Waldman highlighted the beginnings of this heartwarming event, tracing its roots to a casual conversation between two brothers about racing on Thanksgiving. What started with only 200 participants has now blossomed into a monumental gathering with over 2,000 attendees this year.
Elizabeth Macanufo, Development Director for Jewish Family Services (JFS), noted that the increasing attendance signifies not only a rise in financial support but also an opportunity to raise awareness about local needs. “Each year it grows and grows, which is great for us because that means more support, more people who hear about the need in our community,” she explained.
Participants like brothers Jeremiah and De’Andre Butler appreciate the Turkey Trot as a way to kick off their Thanksgiving celebrations with fitness. Jeremiah described it as a “great warm-up for the day,” while De’Andre emphasized the importance of preparing physically before indulging in the holiday feast.
Beyond fitness, Macanufo emphasized the event’s role as a community gathering—a chance to embrace fresh air while supporting a significant cause. All proceeds from the race are donated by the City of Olivette directly to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. Megan Wilson, JFS Board President Elect, expressed gratitude for the city’s support in addressing pressing food scarcity issues.
Waldman underscored that community involvement is crucial in tackling food insecurity, stating, “To be able to help a family with nutrition and food can help them to focus on other things that they need.”
Overall, the Turkey Trot exemplifies how a simple idea can grow into a powerful movement to uplift the community while bringing people together during the holiday season. The hope is that such initiatives will continue to thrive, fostering connection and support for those in need.
This year’s incredible turnout is a testament to the community’s spirit and a reminder of the positive impact collective efforts can make.
