Thanksgiving Kicks Off with Turkey Trot: A Family Tradition Unites South Florida!

The Turkey Trot race has officially kicked off the Thanksgiving celebrations in South Florida, bringing a lively atmosphere to the region. Shortly after 7 AM, the starting gun marked the beginning of the Turkey Trot at Tropical Park.

Spanish runner Alejandro Ocaña was among the first at the starting line and clinched victory in the 10K race. “It was truly impressive. I have participated in previous years, and this year’s race was incredibly fast. In past years, we’ve completed it in 32 minutes, but this time we finished under 31. Running 10K is tough; the heat was manageable, but the humidity was significant,” he shared.

As early as 4 AM, eager runners arrived at Tropical Park. Frankie Ruíz, the director of the Turkey Trot, remarked, “This is a race for the entire family. Families have grown with us over the years.”

The Turkey Trot featured races for all age groups, with children also participating in 100 and 300-meter runs. “The 5K and 10K races, along with the kids’ events, are among the most enjoyable of the year,” Ruiz added.

For some participants, this race represented a personal milestone. First-time runner Carla Palmer expressed her excitement: “This is my first organized race. I’m a bit nervous, but I love starting this Thanksgiving active so I can eat whatever I want later. I’m really excited!”

For the past 30 years, the South Florida community has embraced the Turkey Trot as an annual tradition to commence Thanksgiving celebrations, uniting children, adults, and families in a spirited and healthy way.

This event not only promotes health and fitness but also fosters a sense of community, bringing together people from different backgrounds to celebrate gratitude and togetherness through a shared love of running. As we reflect on the year, it’s heartening to witness such positive community engagement, setting the tone for a thankful and active holiday season.
