Thanksgiving Kicks Off with a Spirited Turkey Trot!

The Turkey Trot race in South Florida marks the kickoff for Thanksgiving celebrations in the region and was well-attended this year. The event commenced shortly after 7 a.m. at Tropical Park, where runners gathered for a day filled with activity.

Spanish runner Alejandro Ocaña was among the frontrunners and triumphed in the 10K race, expressing pride in his performance. “It was impressive. I’ve participated in other years. The race was very fast. In previous years, we finished in 32 minutes, but this year we completed it in under 31. Running 10K is tough. The heat was manageable, but the humidity was quite high,” he shared.

Frankie Ruiz, the director of Turkey Trot, highlighted the event’s family-friendly atmosphere, noting that many families have been coming back for years. The race catered to all age groups, featuring races for children covering distances of 100 and 300 meters.

Ruiz commented on the variety of events, stating, “The 5K and 10K races are among the most beautiful of the year.” This year’s event proved to be transformative for many participants. Carla Palmer, who ran in her first organized race, expressed excitement and nerves. “I’m a little nervous, but I love starting this Thanksgiving day active so I can enjoy my meals later. I’m thrilled,” she said.

For over 30 years, the Turkey Trot has been an integral part of Thanksgiving celebrations in South Florida, bringing together children, adults, and families to kick off the holiday with a spirit of sportsmanship.

This event not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but also fosters community spirit, as families come together in a celebratory atmosphere, setting a positive tone for a day of gratitude and feasting. It embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving, reminding us how shared experiences can create lasting traditions.
