Thanksgiving Alert: Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Cheese Recalled Over Listeria Risk

Connecticut stores are recalling two popular cheese products due to concerns about listeria, just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Ambriola Company, the producer of specific Boar’s Head items, has issued a recall for its Locatelli Pecorino Romano cheese and grated cheese following potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes.

Retailers such as Big Y and Wegmans have alerted customers about the recall and are removing the affected cheeses from their inventory. The products involved in the recall include:

– Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese, UPC: 0-42421-05858 (6-ounce), with a sell-by date ranging from November 21, 2025, to March 12, 2026
– Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Cheese, UPC: 0-42421-15160 (7-ounce), with a sell-by date from November 25, 2025, to May 11, 2026

While Big Y indicated that the Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Cheese is not directly affected, they have chosen to initiate a voluntary market withdrawal as a precaution.

Although there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the consumption of these cheeses, listeria poses a significant health risk. It can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection, particularly in older adults, individuals with compromised immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, confusion, and gastrointestinal distress.

This recall echoes last year’s widespread outbreak of listeria associated with Boar’s Head deli meats, reinforcing the importance of food safety vigilance. If you have purchased any of the recalled products, you can return them to the store for a full refund. For further information or concerns, consumers can reach out to Boar’s Head at 800-352-6277.

With the Thanksgiving season upon us, it’s crucial to remain alert to food safety alerts to ensure a healthy celebration.
