Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and Americans are gearing up for the beloved holiday that embodies gratitude and indulgence. With recent data indicating that 39% of Americans consider Thanksgiving ‘very’ important to them—a slight increase from previous years—82% of adults plan to participate in festivities this season. Now is the critical time for families to start organizing their plans.
When it comes to gathering sizes, a notable shift is observed this year. A survey reveals that 37% of respondents intend to celebrate solely with their immediate family, with another 33% opting for smaller gatherings than usual. Only 21% plan to host large get-togethers, marking a decline in those expecting larger crowds compared to last year. Interestingly, the inclination toward intimate celebrations seems to be more pronounced among Baby Boomers and middle-income earners, while Gen Z stands out as the demographic most likely to enjoy large gatherings.
The preparations leading up to Thanksgiving also reflect changing preferences in food preparation. While 42% of households plan to cook from scratch, this is a drop from 46% in the previous year, possibly due to rising food costs impacting gathering sizes. As part of these shifts, 25% of shoppers are now more inclined to utilize grocery delivery services compared to last year, especially those who are hosting smaller celebrations.
Grocery shopping behavior is also evolving; 65% of consumers plan to buy turkey and other meat options, while 58% will stock up on fresh produce. Convenience appears to be a growing priority as 40% of participants are opting for canned and frozen items, and there’s a rising interest in plant-based meat alternatives, with 15% planning to include them in this year’s feast.
In terms of culinary favorites, stuffing and pumpkin pie remain the stars of Thanksgiving. Side dishes are led by stuffing (30%), followed closely by mashed potatoes and gravy (27%). For dessert, pumpkin pie is the top choice for many, with apple pie and pecan pie trailing closely behind.
While 2023 sees a trend towards smaller gatherings, with many Americans prioritizing quality over quantity, it’s clear that the spirit of Thanksgiving—a time to savor and appreciate—remains strong. As families gather, the focus will likely be on enjoying cherished traditions and creating lasting memories, regardless of the table size. This year’s Thanksgiving promises to be a heartfelt occasion, with preparations taking on a more personal touch in many households.
