Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico has called for an extension of voting hours in Dallas and Williamson counties, highlighting the ongoing confusion surrounding new rules that require voters to cast ballots at designated polling locations. This situation has resulted in many voters being turned away from polling sites and directed to other precincts to vote, according to Kardal Coleman, chairman of the Dallas County Democratic Party.

In response to the issues reported, Dallas County took action by extending voting hours by two hours, following a court order obtained by Coleman. As a result, polling places in Democratic precincts will remain open until 10 p.m. ET, while most of Texas closes at 8 p.m. ET, and specific regions like El Paso and far West Texas close at 9 p.m. ET. Talarico emphasized the necessity of this extension to “ensure all Texans’ voices are heard in this critical election.”

The changes in the voting procedures were initiated by Republican officials who opted for a precinct-based primary election, moving away from the traditional countywide voting method on Election Day. Coleman expressed frustration, stating, “This was all avoidable. We didn’t have to be in this situation.”

Talarico’s opponent, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, echoed these sentiments during a Tuesday news conference, expressing her distress over the voting disruptions. “My heart is breaking,” she said, sharing accounts of voters feeling distressed and confused. Crockett raised concerns about the potential impact these disruptions could have on the election’s outcome, asserting that the integrity of the voting process must be preserved regardless of how close the race may be.

CNN has reached out for comments from both the Dallas County Republican Party and the Williamson County Republican Party. Allen West, former Florida congressman and chair of the Dallas County GOP, previously defended the switch to a precinct-based voting system.

Dallas County elections spokesman Nicholas Solorzano confirmed that officials have noted a significant number of voters being redirected to their correct polling places. Both Talarico and Crockett are encouraging voters to verify their assigned polling locations prior to attempting to vote, as the election date approaches.

This ongoing controversy underlines the critical need for clear communication and effective administration in electoral processes to ensure that every eligible voter can make their voice heard.
