LUBBOCK, Texas – As you tune in to each Texas Tech football game, keep an eye on the defensive line – especially their sacks. The Texas Tech defense has a unique way of contributing to the community through the Quarterback S.A.C.K. initiative, which raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Southwest.
Following a remarkable performance where the Red Raiders recorded a school-record nine sacks against Kansas, head football coach Joey McGuire highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding this partnership. “They’re fired up, man,” McGuire noted. “They want to hit the quarterback no matter what, but this is always a good purpose.”
With the recent win, Texas Tech now has a total of 21 sacks for the season, tying for the highest number of sacks recorded by any NCAA FBS program in a single game this season. Defensive coordinator Shiel Wood expressed his excitement, stating, “I think that’s awesome. And the more sacks, the merrier.”
McGuire shared how the Ronald McDonald House staff reacted to the team’s accomplishments. “They messaged me about the amount raised and she, of course, was like ‘oh my gosh, nine sacks!’” he said. The team tracks this contribution’s impact closely, with McGuire incorporating updates into PowerPoint presentations, encouraging a spirit of service and gratitude among his players.
Texas Tech Athletics has proudly partnered with the Ronald McDonald House for more than 25 years, and fans are still encouraged to join this cause. Donations can be made through the Quarterback S.A.C.K. website, where pledges can be made for each sack recorded by the Texas Tech defense this season. All funds raised go directly to support families in need during challenging times.
The Ronald McDonald House in Lubbock serves as a home away from home for families with children receiving medical care. It supports families needing a respite while navigating challenging circumstances, such as having a newborn in the NICU or children receiving ongoing treatment for serious conditions. Additionally, the organization operates Family Rooms within local children’s hospitals, providing essential comforts and necessities, making their challenging journeys just a little easier.
This initiative not only benefits the families but also fosters a sense of community and giving back, emphasized by McGuire’s message about the importance of gratitude and service in life.
