AUSTIN, Texas — In front of a record crowd of 101,388, the No. 1/2 Texas Football team secured their first Southeastern Conference victory with a 35-13 win over Mississippi State on Saturday at Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium.
Quarterback Arch Manning showcased his talent by completing 26 of 31 passes for 324 yards, along with two touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown. Wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. shone with four catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Quintrevion Wisner contributed with 13 carries for 88 yards.
The game shifted in Texas’ favor after they stopped Mississippi State on a fourth-down attempt at the Texas 28-yard line. The Longhorns capitalized with a quick 5-play, 72-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by Jaydon Blue, marking his fourth rushing touchdown of the season.
Texas ended the first half with a thrilling moment as Manning connected with Moore Jr. on a 49-yard touchdown pass, giving Texas a 14-6 lead. This impressive 8-play drive spanned 75 yards and took just 1:27 off the clock.
Early in the third quarter, the Texas defense turned the tide by forcing a turnover. Vernon Broughton sacked Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr., resulting in a fumble that he recovered at the Texas 43-yard line. The Longhorns have now forced a total of eight turnovers over five games, maintaining a streak of at least one turnover in each matchup.
Manning showcased his dual-threat capability with a 26-yard run, followed by a one-yard rushing touchdown that extended Texas’ lead to 21-6 at the end of the third quarter. This marked his third career rushing touchdown and the third game this season where he recorded both a passing and a rushing touchdown. On Texas’ next drive, Manning threw a 27-yard pass to Moore Jr., who scored his second touchdown of the game. This play finished an impressive 8-play, 85-yard drive for the Longhorns.
The victory was solidified when Isaiah Bond scored his first career rushing touchdown with a 26-yard run with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter, bringing the final score to 35-13 in favor of Texas.
