Steve Sarkisian and his coaching staff are gearing up for an aggressive approach in this year’s transfer portal, particularly focusing on enhancing the linebacker position for the Texas Longhorns. The departure of key players such as Anthony Hill Jr., Liona Lefau, and Trey Moore has left the team in need of reinforcements. Currently, Ty’Anthony Smith stands out as the only returning linebacker who has logged more than 24 defensive snaps heading into 2026, making it imperative for the Longhorns to secure at least two capable starters through the transfer route.
The linebacker role is set to gain even more significance under new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, suggesting that Texas’s NIL budget will likely be directed toward acquiring strong talent in this area when the portal opens in January.
Among the prospects on their radar, three linebackers stand out as prime targets:
Jon Jon Kamara from Kansas boasts an impressive blend of size and athleticism. At 6’4″ and 230 lbs., he has showcased his versatility as a rotational player, effectively defending against both tight ends in the passing game and excelling in run support. With three years of eligibility remaining after redshirting in 2024, he could provide a significant boost to Texas’s linebacker corps.
Khmori House, who played at North Carolina, emerged as a top target for Texas during his high school years in 2024 and remains a priority. His agility on the field allows him to play like a defensive back, although he has proven to be a formidable force against the run despite weighing just 215 lbs. With two years of eligibility left, House could represent an excellent addition to the Longhorns’ defense.
Finally, Steven Soles Jr. from Kentucky has displayed versatility similar to Kamara, contributing in various roles over the past two seasons, including as a pass rusher and traditional off-ball linebacker. Standing at 6’2″ and 240 lbs., Soles Jr.’s athleticism aligns with Muschamp’s preference for versatile “tweener” linebackers who can adapt to different defensive schemes. He also holds two years of eligibility, making him a compelling candidate for Texas as they seek to rebuild their linebacker unit.
With an evident need for depth and talent at linebacker, the Longhorns are strategically looking to make impactful additions to their roster through the transfer portal, setting the stage for a competitive 2026 season.
