Texas Dominates Oklahoma: A Game for the Ages

DALLAS, Texas – As the clock hit 6:05 P.M. Central Time, Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian proudly donned the Golden Hat Trophy after his top-ranked Longhorns secured a commanding 34-3 victory over the No. 18/16-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon.

It was not until their sixth game of the 2024 season that Texas (6-0, 2-0) faced an opponent taking the lead, as Oklahoma (4-2, 1-2) managed to score a 42-yard field goal during their third offensive series. This drive, which lasted 4:42 and covered only 38 yards over 11 plays, marked the only successful scoring attempt for the Sooners, ending with just 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Upon receiving the kickoff, quarterback Quinn Ewers, returning from an absence since a dominating 56-7 win over UTSA on September 14, led a 10-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gunnar Helm. This scoring play occurred just three minutes and 50 seconds later, initiating a sequence of six scoring opportunities for Texas, which amassed 406 total yards on 61 plays against a Sooner defense ranked 43rd nationally.

The Longhorns showcased offensive dominance in the final five minutes of the second quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points, including two consecutive touchdowns. Silas Bolden recovered a fumble in the end zone after a 36-yard dash by Quintrevion Wisner, who later added a 43-yard touchdown run on a subsequent play, following consecutive lost fumbles by Oklahoma.

Despite a setback on Texas’ first possession of the third quarter, where Ewers and wide receiver Ryan Wingo could not convert on a 4th-and-2 at the Oklahoma 10-yard line, the Longhorns extended their lead to 24-3 with a 41-yard field goal by Bert Auburn. He later added another field goal from 29 yards to increase the margin to 27-3 with just 7:44 left in the game.

Texas’ defense thwarted Oklahoma’s offense, which had 168 total yards until a lengthy 17-play drive to close the game. Following a defensive stop, Helm made an impressive catch, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Jerrick Gibson, which was followed by a rushing touchdown from Ewers.

The second half concluded with Texas scoring on its final three possessions, showcasing a formidable offensive display.
