The Houston Texans remain uncertain about the status of wide receiver Stefon Diggs as they head into a press conference on Monday. A definitive update is expected before the team departs for New York to face the Jets on Thursday.
Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports that Diggs is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his knee, which aims to clarify the severity of his injury. The four-time Pro Bowl receiver exited Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts in the third quarter due to a non-contact injury.
Diggs, who was acquired by the Texans from the Buffalo Bills during the offseason, sustained the injury while attempting to evade Colts defender Kenny Moore. After grabbing his right knee, he received attention from trainers before walking to the locker room. Prior to his departure, Diggs reassured fans with a thumbs-up gesture, indicating he was alright. The MRI results will determine whether he suffered a torn ACL or MCL, or if the injury is merely a strain.
“It’s unfortunate to see Stef go down there,” said Texans coach DeMeco Ryans. “He’s still being evaluated for a knee injury. We’ll have more information as the week progresses.”
Losing Diggs could pose a significant setback for the Texans, who are already facing challenges with their receiving corps. Nico Collins is on injured reserve and is not expected to return until at least November 10. Meanwhile, Tank Dell, who caught a touchdown pass in Houston’s 23-20 victory, has struggled to maintain the success he experienced earlier in the season.
Diggs was having a strong game prior to his injury, leading the team with five receptions for 81 yards. He has been a crucial target for quarterback C.J. Stroud, ranking fifth in the league with 47 catches and second on the team with 496 receiving yards.
“Prayers go out to Stef. God doesn’t make any mistakes. I hope he’s okay,” Stroud commented. “I don’t know what’s happening yet, but I’m praying and hoping he feels better … It’s tough to see him go down.”
The Texans are set to play against the Jets this Thursday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Amazon Prime.
