The Houston Texans have made a strategic move to bolster their receiving corps, claiming wide receiver Diontae Johnson off waivers after Tank Dell’s unfortunate season-ending knee injury. Dell sustained significant injuries – a torn ACL and a dislocated kneecap – during the Texans’ 27-19 defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Texans were not the only team interested in Johnson. The Los Angeles Chargers also placed a waiver claim for the player, indicating that his skills are still valued across the league. Johnson’s tumultuous tenure with the Baltimore Ravens came to an end recently when the team waived him following a series of incidents, including a one-game suspension after he declined to participate in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles and subsequent excusal from team activities.
Before his time with the Ravens, Johnson was traded from the Carolina Panthers to Baltimore. He had a limited impact during his brief stay, playing just 39 snaps and recording only one catch for six yards. In contrast, his earlier stint with the Steelers showcased his potential; drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Johnson amassed 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2021.
The Texans are looking to rebound from their recent injuries, relying heavily on standout receiver Nico Collins and looking to develop depth with players like John Metchie III, Robert Woods, and Xavier Hutchinson. As the season progresses, Johnson will have the opportunity to prove himself and earn a renewed contract as he will be an unrestricted free agent by season’s end.
This transition could serve as a much-needed second chance for Johnson. If he can capitalize on this opportunity with the Texans, it may lead to a revival in his career and possibly set the stage for a successful future in the NFL.
