Texans Shock Fans by Waiving Receiver Diontae Johnson Before Playoffs

In a surprising turn of events, the Houston Texans have waived wide receiver Diontae Johnson ahead of their crucial divisional-round playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach DeMeco Ryans commented on Johnson’s situation, stating, “Unfortunately, with Diontae it didn’t work out. We’re on to the Chiefs.”

Johnson’s time with the Texans was marked by frustration, particularly following the team’s wild-card playoff victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. He was noticeably upset in the locker room after receiving limited playing time, participating in only 15 out of 70 offensive snaps and being targeted just once, which resulted in one catch for 12 yards. His teammates, running back Joe Mixon and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, attempted to console him amidst his disappointment.

Prior to his brief stint with Houston, Johnson was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on December 23, 2023. His tenure with Baltimore was marred by controversy, including a one-game suspension for refusing to play in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1. Johnson had been traded to the Ravens from the Carolina Panthers on October 29, where he recorded only one catch for 6 yards despite being a former third-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

During his time in Pittsburgh, Johnson showcased his potential, amassing 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns, highlighted by a Pro Bowl selection in 2021 when he achieved over 1,000 receiving yards in a season.

In response to Johnson’s departure, the Texans have promoted wide receiver Jared Wayne to the active roster and signed veteran Alex Erickson to the practice squad, ensuring they remain competitive as they head into the playoffs.

This situation serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of professional sports. While Johnson’s career has been turbulent lately, his prior achievements indicate he has the talent to bounce back and find success in the future. The Texans’ decision to move forward without him reflects their commitment to build a cohesive unit for their playoff push, and it is hoped that this pathway will yield positive results as they face off against the Chiefs.
