Texans release CJ Gardner-Johnson in defense shakeup ahead of Titans

The Houston Texans have opted to release veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, as reported by multiple outlets. Gardner-Johnson, 27, joined the Texans in March via a trade and was an integral part of the defense, starting the team’s first three matches this season and participating in 96 percent of the defensive snaps. During his brief stint, he amassed a total of 15 tackles.

The decision to let go of Gardner-Johnson comes shortly after Jimmie Ward was reinstated from the commissioner’s exempt list, although Ward is still sidelined, listed on the physically unable to perform list. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston suggests the release follows internal discord, with Gardner-Johnson expressing dissatisfaction with his role, particularly his limited opportunities to blitz, and openly criticizing teammates. Furthermore, Gardner-Johnson communicated to the Texans his desire to remain with the team and not be traded.

The Texans plan to fill Gardner-Johnson’s spot with M.J. Stewart, who is expected to step up as the next key player in the position. Intriguingly, alongside the release of Gardner-Johnson, offensive lineman Kenyon Green, originally involved in the trade bringing Gardner-Johnson to Houston from Philadelphia, was also waived.

As the Texans stand at 0-3 this season, they are gearing up to face another winless team, the Tennessee Titans, this Sunday. Despite the challenging start, the Texans aim to turn around their fortunes and secure their first victory of the season. This change in roster reflects Houston’s strategy to overcome their current struggles and reshape their lineup for better performance on the field.
