The Houston Texans have released wide receiver Diontae Johnson just days ahead of their divisional-round playoff clash against the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach DeMeco Ryans expressed disappointment at how the situation unfolded, stating, “Unfortunately, with Diontae it didn’t work out. We’re on to the Chiefs.”
Johnson’s tenure with the Texans was notably short and frustrating. Following a wild-card playoff victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, he appeared visibly upset in the locker room, grappling with limited playing time and a lack of targets. Despite the support from teammates like running back Joe Mixon and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, Johnson’s performance did not meet expectations. Over two games with Houston, he managed only three receptions for a total of 24 yards, significantly below his prior productivity.
Prior to joining the Texans, Johnson was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens, who had previously suspended him for one game due to his refusal to enter a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. His stint with the Ravens was brief, having played just 39 snaps and recording one catch for six yards. Before that, Johnson started the 2023 season with the Carolina Panthers after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he had established himself with 30 receptions for 257 yards and three touchdowns across the season.
Diontae Johnson was originally drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2019 draft and had notable success during his time there, including a Pro Bowl selection in 2021 after achieving his first 1,000-yard season and a career-high eight touchdown receptions.
Despite his recent struggles, there is hope that Johnson can regain his previous form as he looks for a new opportunity. With his past achievements, including his time as a productive receiver for the Steelers, he holds the potential to contribute significantly to another team, highlighting the dynamic nature of the NFL where players can evolve and rebound from setbacks.
