The Houston Texans are still awaiting clarity on Stefon Diggs’ status for the rest of the season ahead of Monday’s press conference. A definitive update is expected before the team flies to New York to face the Jets on Thursday.
Jonathan M. Alexander from the Houston Chronicle reports that Diggs is scheduled for an MRI on his knee, which should determine the severity of his injury. The four-time Pro Bowl receiver exited Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts in the third quarter after a non-contact injury.
Diggs, who was acquired by the Texans from the Buffalo Bills this offseason, sustained the injury while attempting to evade Colts defender Kenny Moore, immediately grabbing his right knee. Trainers assessed him for several minutes before he left the field and headed to the locker room, giving a thumbs up to reassure fans.
The MRI will reveal whether Diggs has a torn ACL or MCL, or if the injury is merely a strain. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans commented on the situation, saying, “Unfortunate to see Stef go down there. He’s still being evaluated for a knee. We’ll find out further information as the week goes on.”
The potential loss of Diggs could significantly affect the already undermanned Texans’ receiving corps. Nico Collins is currently on injured reserve and isn’t expected to return until at least November 10. Meanwhile, Tank Dell, who caught a touchdown during Houston’s 23-20 win, has struggled to replicate his standout rookie performance.
Diggs finished Sunday’s game leading the team with five catches for 81 yards and has become a crucial target for quarterback C.J. Stroud in recent games, ranking fifth nationally with 47 receptions and second among Texans in receiving yards with 496.
Stroud expressed his concern, saying, “Prayers go out to Stef. God doesn’t make any mistakes. I hope he’s OK. I don’t know what’s going on yet. I’m praying and hoping he starts to feel better … Not easy seeing him go down.”
The Texans are set to face the Jets on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. on Amazon Prime.
