The Houston Texans triumphed with a commanding 32-12 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round of the NFL playoffs, securing their place in the Divisional Round. The matchup took place at NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday.
Initially, the Chargers got off to a promising start, courtesy of two field goals from Cameron Dicker, which gave them a 6-0 advantage. However, the tide began to shift as Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud faced a setback with an interception early in the second quarter. In response, Houston’s defense made a critical play; cornerback Kamari Lassiter intercepted a deep pass from Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, setting the stage for the Texans to bounce back.
Stroud quickly found his rhythm, connecting with wide receiver Nico Collins for a 13-yard touchdown just before halftime, leveling the score at 6-6. Following this, kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn successfully converted a field goal to give Houston the lead, ending the half with a score of 10-6.
The Texans’ defense dominated in the third quarter, not allowing any points from the Chargers. A 37-yard field goal from Fairbairn extended the lead to 13-6, and shortly afterward, an interception by safety Eric Murray left the Chargers reeling, putting Houston ahead 20-6.
In the fourth quarter, Fairbairn added another field goal, pushing the lead to 23-6. Although Herbert connected with wide receiver Ladd McConkey for an 86-yard touchdown, the Chargers fell short as the Texans’ defense continued to shine. Houston clinched the game with a two-point conversion prompted by cornerback D’Angelo Ross, followed by a 17-yard touchdown run from running back Joe Mixon.
Overall, the Texans showcased their resilience, particularly on defense, with Herbert suffering an unusually challenging game, throwing four interceptions compared to just three during the regular season. This victory not only eliminates the Chargers from the playoffs but also sets the stage for the Texans to vie for further playoff success in the upcoming Divisional Round.
