Tesla’s New Model Y L: A Game Changer for Families in China?

Tesla has submitted an application for a sales license for its new six-seater Model Y L to the Chinese authorities, providing detailed specifications of the vehicle. This model is an expanded version of the popular Model Y, featuring three rows of seating and accommodating up to six passengers. The company has announced that the Model Y L is set to launch in China this autumn.

The new Model Y L showcases notable increased dimensions, measuring 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, with a wheelbase that has been extended to 3,040 mm—150 mm longer than the five-seater Model Y. Additionally, it has a curb weight of 2,088 kg, which is 96 kg heavier than the standard version. The vehicle will be equipped with ternary NMC batteries sourced from LG.

In terms of performance, the Model Y L will feature an all-wheel-drive system powered by dual motors: one on the front axle generating 142 kW and another on the rear producing 198 kW, yielding a total power output of 340 kW (456 hp). The top speed is reported to be 201 km/h.

For comparative clarity, here are some key specifications between the Model Y variants:

– **Model Y 5-seater**: Length 4,797 mm, Width 1,920 mm, Height 1,624 mm, Wheelbase 2,890 mm, Total Power 331 kW, Curb Weight 1,992 kg.
– **Model Y 6-seater**: Length 4,976 mm, Width 1,920 mm, Height 1,668 mm, Wheelbase 3,040 mm, Total Power 340 kW, Curb Weight 2,088 kg.

This launch is significant as it marks the first time Tesla will introduce a three-row Model Y variant in China, a market where the Model Y has previously excelled. In 2024, it topped sales charts, accounting for 74.6% of Tesla’s sales in the region. However, sales figures have seen a decline in early 2025 compared to the previous year, with the Model Y’s performance facing challenges from a growing number of local electric vehicle manufacturers.

The anticipated price for the Model Y L is projected to be around 300,000 yuan (approximately 41,800 USD), positioning it to compete with other seven-seater models in China, including the Onvo L90 and BYD Tang L.

This introduction of the Model Y L could revitalize Tesla’s market presence in China, especially as consumers increasingly seek versatile electric vehicle options that accommodate larger families.
