Tesla has officially unveiled the much-anticipated refresh of the Model Y, known internally as Juniper, in China. This updated version of the world’s best-selling electric vehicle combines evolutionary changes rather than revolutionary upgrades. Starting prices for the Model Y Juniper are set at 263,500 yuan (approximately €34,900 or $35,900), with deliveries slated to commence in March.
While many had expected the refresh to arrive earlier, it seems Tesla has managed to roll it out just at the start of 2024. The Model Y Juniper complements the recently revamped Model 3 Highland, which debuted at the end of 2023. Prototypes of the Juniper have been seen in China, and Tesla has shared details and images of the refreshed model on its Chinese website.
The Juniper features several enhancements drawn from the Model 3 Highland, including improved acoustics for a quieter cabin experience, new ambient lighting, and an additional screen for rear-seat passengers. Notable upgrades include new ventilated seating and the ability for the rear seat backrests to fold electronically. The steering wheel adopts a design reminiscent of the Model 3, but the Juniper model includes a traditional turn signal stalk—a departure from the button-based controls seen in the Model 3 Highland.
In terms of performance, Tesla has not released specific technical details, but claims that the Juniper will benefit from enhanced efficiency and increased power. For the Model Y Long Range variant with all-wheel drive, the claimed range has improved from 688 kilometers (428 miles) to 719 kilometers (447 miles) according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, though it remains unclear whether this is due to greater efficiency or a larger battery. Historically, the Model Y was already known for its efficiency compared to competitors.
Charging details are still forthcoming, but the Model Y Juniper is expected to maintain the previous model’s characteristics, with a 400-volt system and maximum charging power still capped at 250 kW. Acceleration has seen improvement; the all-wheel-drive variant is reportedly capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, marking a significant enhancement in performance.
The chassis of the Juniper has also been refined to provide a smoother driving experience, remedying a common criticism of the original Model Y’s somewhat bumpy ride. Although a performance version has not yet been introduced, it is anticipated to debut later this year with slight cosmetic updates.
Visually, the Juniper distinguishes itself with a modern aesthetic that incorporates elements from Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck. The car showcases a more refined front with narrow headlight units and a continuous LED light strip, deviating from traditional designs. Notably, a new front bumper camera has been added, enhancing parking capabilities by providing a clearer view directly in front of the vehicle.
Currently, the Model Y Juniper is not yet featured on Tesla’s German or U.S. websites, as production is exclusively taking place at Giga Shanghai. As production ramps up, updates for U.S. and European models are expected as local factories undergo conversions.
Overall, the refreshed Model Y Juniper maintains the recognizable aspects of its predecessor while introducing meaningful upgrades aimed at enhancing user experience and performance. As more markets prepare for its release, consumers can look forward to a notable addition to Tesla’s lineup that blends familiarity with modern enhancements.
