Tesla Unveils the Game-Changing Model YL: What to Expect?

Tesla is set to introduce the new ‘Model YL’, an expanded 6-seater variant of the popular Model Y, featuring a longer wheelbase and enhanced dimensions, which will be available in China this fall. This announcement was made through the company’s official Weibo account and follows earlier speculations regarding the vehicle’s development.

The Model YL, unveiled today, is positioned in response to a growing trend of all-electric third-row SUVs emerging in the Chinese market, such as the competitively priced Onvo L90. Tesla’s new model boasts a length of 4976 mm and a height of 1668 mm, making it approximately 7 inches longer and 1 inch taller than the original Model Y. Most notably, the wheelbase has been extended by about 6 inches to 3040 mm, offering increased interior space that can accommodate more passengers comfortably.

In addition to increased dimensions, the new Model YL will utilize LG battery cells and has been reported to be priced around $50,000 in China, which reflects its larger size and advanced battery technology. In contrast, the Onvo L90, a direct competitor, starts at approximately $39,000.

The regulatory approval filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) provided additional details about the new model specifications, including its curb weight of 2088 kg and a motor output of 142 kW for the front and 198 kW for the rear.

In light of the competition tightening, this model aims to rejuvenate Tesla’s market share in China, where strategic adjustments may be necessary. The optimism surrounding the Model YL’s launch highlights Tesla’s adaptability and responsiveness to market demands, indicating a commitment to competing effectively against emerging players in the growing EV segment.
