The highly anticipated refresh of the Tesla Model Y, known as the Juniper, has made its debut in China. This evolution of the world’s best-selling electric vehicle is set to start at a price of 263,500 yuan (approximately $35,900) with deliveries expected to commence in March. Although many anticipated this update by the end of 2024, its unveiling just ten days into the new year suggests that Tesla completed the project ahead of schedule.
This revamped Model Y follows the arrival of the Model 3 Highland and incorporates several enhancements that improve the overall driving experience. Key upgrades include improved acoustics for a quieter cabin, new ambient lighting, an additional rear-seat display, ventilated seats, and electrically folding rear seatbacks. The interior design also features a steering wheel similar to that of the new Model 3, with some variants displaying a traditional turn signal stalk.
While Tesla has not yet disclosed specific technical details for the Juniper, it promises greater efficiency and increased power. The Long Range variant boasts a range of 719 kilometers (447 miles)—up from 688 kilometers (428 miles)—indicating enhanced efficiency even if the exact methods behind it remain unclear.
Performance metrics also show improvements, with the all-wheel-drive Model Y achieving a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds, a notable 0.6 seconds faster than the previous version. This implies that the Juniper will deliver not only enhanced acceleration but also a smoother ride due to a revised chassis featuring new springs and dampers.
Aesthetic updates are evident, as Tesla has redefined the car’s look, integrating design elements reminiscent of the Cybertruck and Cybercab. Additionally, the integration of a front camera in the redesigned bumper aims to improve parking accuracy, contributing to a more user-friendly experience. However, the Juniper model is currently only promoted on Tesla’s Chinese website, as production at Giga Shanghai has begun. The refreshed model will later expand to the European and U.S. markets following necessary adaptations to local manufacturing facilities.
