Tesla has enhanced its Model Y lineup in the U.S. by introducing a new All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant, which is priced at $41,990. This move not only offers a more accessible option for buyers interested in dual-motor traction but also streamlines the naming of existing trims across the range.
The new Model Y AWD fills the gap between the entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant and the higher-priced Premium trims, providing an attractive choice for consumers reluctant to commit to the full Premium package. The newly launched AWD model boasts an EPA-estimated range of 294 miles (473 km), slightly less than the RWD variant which achieves 321 miles (516 km). However, it significantly improves acceleration, going from 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds, compared to the 7.2 seconds of the RWD version.
In conjunction with the introduction of the AWD variant, Tesla has streamlined its naming conventions by removing the “Standard” label. The previously named Model Y Standard is now simply referred to as Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD).
Tesla’s U.S. Model Y lineup now includes five variants:
– Model Y RWD – $39,990
– Model Y AWD – $41,990
– Model Y Premium RWD – $44,990
– Model Y Premium AWD – $48,990
– Model Y Performance AWD – $57,490
This update creates a more segmented lineup as Tesla aims to maximize sales by addressing various pricing and performance preferences, paralleling the approach taken in the European market where a RWD Long Range variant is also available.
While the base models are termed “Standard” no longer, they still differ significantly from their Premium counterparts. The base models are equipped with a 69 kWh battery, while the Premium versions feature a larger 78.1 kWh battery. Additional distinctions include wheel sizes, lighting features, and interior enhancements. The base model comes with 18-inch steel wheels compared to the Premium’s 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, basic LED headlights versus advanced full LED light bars with adaptive high beams, and a more simplistic interior setup with fewer technological features.
The Premium versions also elevate the driving experience with superior audio systems, all-vegan leather seating with heated options, and enhanced technology like a rear touchscreen and a panoramic glass roof.
Overall, this introduction of the new AWD variant and modifications to the lineup reflects Tesla’s commitment to broadening its appeal across the consumer spectrum while maintaining a competitive edge in the electric vehicle market.
