Terry’s House Seeks Community Support for Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday, a global initiative that began in 2012 in New York, encourages individuals to assist others through volunteering or donating to charitable organizations. This year, local groups like Terry’s House in downtown Fresno are calling for community support on this special day.

Katie Zenovich, the Senior Vice President of Development & External Affairs for Community Health System, stressed the importance of donations for Terry’s House, which is entirely funded by donors. The organization aims to raise $30,000 this Giving Tuesday, which will help maintain services and cover operational costs. “Donations keep the lights on, keep PG&E going,” Zenovich explained.

Terry’s House, which opened in 2011, provides a vital service for families with loved ones in critical care at Community Regional Medical Center. With 20 rooms, a communal kitchen, a living room, and a laundry facility, it creates a home-like atmosphere for those in need. Whitney Johnson, the manager of Terry’s House, described it as a “one-stop shop,” where families can find comfort, normalcy, and connection during difficult times.

The facility also boasts amenities like computers, phones, and a playroom filled with toys for children, ensuring that families can spend quality time together. One resident, Porsche Mancilla, shared her experience at Terry’s House after her baby was born six weeks early. Originally from Fresno but now living in Kansas, she expressed relief at being close to her newborn in the NICU, crediting the supportive environment for alleviating her anxiety during this challenging period.

“It’s not like a hotel, it’s more like family,” Mancilla noted, highlighting the emotional warmth and community spirit present at Terry’s House.

Giving Tuesday represents a valuable opportunity for the community to rally around families in need and to show support for initiatives like Terry’s House that provide hope and comfort in challenging circumstances.

In a world that can often feel disconnected, events like Giving Tuesday remind us of the importance of extending a helping hand. Every donation makes a difference, and together, we can foster a sense of community where compassion thrives.
