Tensions Rise in Kenya: Protests Mark 35 Years of Democracy Struggles

Kenyan police engaged with protesters marking the 35th anniversary of a pivotal pro-democracy rally on July 7, 1990, using tear gas and water cannon amid rising anti-government sentiment, particularly among the youth. This backlash is fueled by ongoing frustrations over allegations of corruption, police brutality, and the abduction of government critics.

The protests are a continuation of unrest that began in 2024 over a controversial finance bill that increased taxes during a challenging cost-of-living crisis. Although the Kenyan government withdrew the tax proposal in June of that year, public anger has surged following recent troubling incidents, including the death of a teacher in police custody and the fatal shooting of an unarmed street vendor by law enforcement.

Last month alone, political unrest resulted in at least 16 deaths and numerous injuries during anti-government demonstrations. The anniversary events in multiple Kenyan cities on July 7, 2025, faced a heavy police presence, as security forces blocked major roads leading into Nairobi and the vicinity of government buildings to prevent gatherings.

Amid these tensions, the Kenyan Human Rights Commission reported that individuals they described as “hired goons” disrupted a press conference held by activists advocating against arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings targeting protesters.

In a statement issued prior to the events, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen remarked that security forces were on alert to handle any disruptions, labeling last month’s protests as “terrorism disguised as dissent,” a comment that sparked further outrage among activists and citizens alike.

The climate of fear and repression reflected in these actions underscores a critical time for Kenya’s democratic process and civil liberties, as citizens continue to demand accountability from their leaders and justice for victims of state violence.

In a hopeful light, continued advocacy for democracy and human rights may foster greater awareness and support for change, encouraging unity among citizens striving for a more transparent and responsive government.
