Katie Boulter, the British No 2 in tennis, has opened up about the alarming level of online abuse directed at players, revealing that she and her family have received threatening messages, including death threats. Sharing her experiences with BBC Sport, Boulter highlighted the toxic nature of online interactions, particularly towards athletes.
The 28-year-old cited harrowing examples of the abuse, including a message that shockingly suggested she should buy “candles and a coffin for your entire family” alongside a threat concerning her grandmother. Other messages indicated anger towards her performance and included vile sentiments such as wishing her cancer. This isn’t the first time Boulter has brought attention to the harassment faced by athletes; in 2014, she discussed the challenges that come with gaining visibility in the sport.
Reflecting on the motives behind such abuse, Boulter speculated that much of it stems from individuals who gamble on matches and lose money. While she has developed resilience over the years, the threats raise real safety concerns. “You really don’t know if this person is on site. You really don’t know if they’re nearby or if they know where you live,” she expressed, emphasizing the vulnerability athletes face.
The distressing message targeting her family coincided with her first-round victory at the French Open on May 29, further showcasing the troubling intersection of sports and online harassment. Boulter noted that not only is the frequency of abuse increasing, but the severity of the messages is also escalating. She fears for the impact this environment could have on younger athletes entering the sport, stating, “I don’t think there’s anything off the cards now.”
