Tennessee’s Smokey Grey Uniform Debut Hints at Star Vols Comeback

Tennessee will unveil its much-anticipated 2025 Smokey Grey uniforms this Saturday during their matchup against New Mexico State at Neyland Stadium. The “Volunteer Spirit” uniforms highlight a commitment to honoring the United States Armed Forces while continuing the smokey grey series’ innovative design.

This year’s uniforms include several unique elements, such as a distinctive Davy Crockett stripe adorning the helmet and shoulders, a striking two-tone aesthetic for the jerseys and pants, and stencil numbers featured on both the front and back of the jerseys.

Among the standout features that fans are eagerly anticipating is the return of the beloved “Star Vols” logo. Described as a “military-inspired patch,” it will be prominently displayed on the front of the pants and the helmet bumper, according to UT Athletics. Notably, this marks the first time since the end of the 20th century that the Star Vols logo will make an appearance on the field. The last occasion it was used was during a game against Vanderbilt on November 30, 1996, and prior to that, it was seen in Neyland Stadium the week earlier against Kentucky.

While fans have often showcased the Star Vols logo on gameday merchandise, this Saturday’s game offers a significant moment as the Big Orange will wear it on the field for the first time in decades.

The Vols, currently ranked No. 23 with a record of 6-3, will host New Mexico State, who stands at 3-6, at 4:15 p.m. ET. This game will also serve as Tennessee’s Salute to Service and Homecoming event for the season.

The pregame festivities will include an impressive flyover featuring two F-35s from the 58th Fighter Squadron based at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, scheduled for 4:09 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Fans should look forward to exciting coverage of the game and the unveiling of these special uniforms this weekend.
