Tennessee’s much-anticipated sales tax holiday is set to take place this weekend from 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 25, until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2025. This annual event provides an opportunity for residents to purchase select clothing, school supplies, and computers without incurring sales tax.
During the three-day holiday, specific rules apply to various categories of items:
Clothing: Basic apparel such as shirts, pants, socks, shoes, and dresses will be tax-free if the cost of each item is $100 or less. However, luxury items including jewelry, handbags, and sports gear will not qualify for tax exemption.
School Supplies: A range of school essentials, including backpacks, binders, crayons, paper, pencils, and art materials, can be purchased without sales tax, provided each item is priced at $100 or below.
Computers: Personal-use computers, laptops, and tablets are eligible for tax exemption if they are priced at $1,500 or under.
It’s important to note what is not covered by the holiday. Items that exceed the specified price limits for clothing and school supplies, as well as computers priced above $1,500, will still be subject to sales tax. Additionally, business purchases, software, printer supplies, flash drives, and household appliances are excluded from this tax break.
The return of this sales tax holiday is especially timely as students prepare for the upcoming school year, with classes starting on Thursday, August 7. This event provides a significant opportunity for families looking to manage the costs associated with back-to-school shopping.
This year’s sales tax holiday could alleviate some financial pressure for parents and students alike, making back-to-school preparations a bit more affordable.
