Ten Hag Celebrates United’s Stunning 7-0 Triumph: What’s Next?

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised the team’s performance after their impressive 7-0 victory over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Key players Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen each scored twice, while Antony added a penalty to secure Ten Hag’s most significant win as manager. This match marked the largest margin of victory for United since their 9-0 win against Southampton in February 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Not for me but for the team this is the perfect night,” Ten Hag stated. “We achieved everything we aimed for; we secured the next round, scored some fantastic goals, entertained the fans, and worked on our game model, so we are pleased.”

In a strategic move, Ten Hag rotated his squad against League One opposition Barnsley, making eight changes from the lineup that won 3-0 against Southampton on Saturday. Rashford was among three players to retain their starting position and capitalized on the opportunity by scoring two goals, marking the first time since February 2023 that he scored more than once in a match.

“I know from my first season here that when he scores, it makes things easier for the team,” Ten Hag remarked on Rashford’s performance. “Having a player who consistently finds the net can be game-changing. Many things can be executed well between the boxes, but matches are ultimately decided in the box.”

United have shown resilience by rebounding from their recent 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, tallying 10 goals without conceding against Southampton and Barnsley combined.

“I wasn’t devastated after the defeat to Liverpool, and I am not celebrating now,” Ten Hag added. “It’s an ongoing process. I have a clear vision of where we need to go. We showcased our speed and dynamism today, and we have players capable of controlling possession. We must enhance our efforts to perfect all aspects of our game.”
