A powerful storm, described as a microburst accompanied by thunderstorms, swept through Tempe, Arizona, on Monday afternoon, displacing more than 130 residents and leaving at least 10,000 customers without power. This intense weather event, which started around 1 p.m. and lasted just over three hours, affected a total of 34,000 customers in the region, according to local officials.

The storm caused severe damage to several apartment buildings, prompting emergency responses to assist those affected. A microburst is characterized by a concentrated downburst of wind, typically spanning less than 2.5 miles in diameter, which can result in extensive localized damage.

Among the notable areas affected was the Phoenix Zoo, which reported significant damage on its grounds. Despite the damage to trees and walkways, the zoo confirmed that all animals, guests, and staff remained unharmed. In light of the damage, the zoo will remain closed for two days to facilitate cleanup and restoration efforts.

As of 8 p.m. local time, a flood watch continues to be in effect, with recovery efforts underway to restore power and assist those displaced by the storm. The resilience of the affected communities has shone through as they come together to support one another during this challenging time.
