“Teenager Cavan Sullivan shatters MLS record in historic debut match”

Cavan Sullivan made history by becoming the youngest player to feature for a senior MLS team, playing for the Philadelphia Union in their match against the New England Revolution on Wednesday. At 14 years and 293 days old, Sullivan broke Freddy Adu’s long-standing record.

Sullivan was called into the senior squad for the first time on Tuesday and entered the game late in the second half, contributing to the Union’s decisive 5-1 victory. This appearance follows his signing of the largest homegrown contract in MLS history on May 9, which includes a transfer to Manchester City after he turns 18.

In the match, Sullivan’s brother Quinn also scored for the Union. Although Cavan had limited opportunities with the ball, he made a notable run towards the end, culminating in a powerful shot on goal from outside the penalty area.

After the game, Freddy Adu congratulated Sullivan on social media, acknowledging the difficulty of breaking the record and wishing him luck.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Sullivan is younger than any debutant in the NBA, NHL, NFL, WNBA, or Major League Baseball since at least 1970. The previous youngest debut in these soccer leagues was Ethan Nwaneri, who appeared for Arsenal in 2022 at 15 years and 181 days old.

Adu had held the record as the youngest MLS player since he debuted for D.C. United in 2004 at 14 years and 306 days. Adu’s career spanned multiple countries and clubs, and he earned his first cap for the U.S. senior team at 16 years and 234 days, still a record.

Born in Philadelphia to soccer-playing parents, Sullivan joined the Union’s youth academy four years ago and made his professional debut for Philadelphia Union II in March.

Reflecting on his achievements, Sullivan downplayed the significance of breaking records, emphasizing everyone’s unique journey. While details about his future transfer to Manchester City remain undisclosed, Sullivan confirmed that the collaboration between the Union and the City Group influenced his decision.

Sullivan expressed his excitement about starting his career with his hometown club and praised the Union fans. He also highlighted the significance of the agreement between Philadelphia and Manchester City, calling Manchester City his “dream team.”
