A 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart, whose body was discovered on July 3 near Crawford Pond in Union, Maine. Authorities reported that Stewart died from strangulation and blunt force trauma after she went paddleboarding alone on the evening of July 2.

Stewart was reported missing when she failed to return home, prompting friends and family to raise the alarm. Her body was located near an island in the pond during the early hours of July 3. The teenager was apprehended by police in Union on Wednesday evening and was taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center, a juvenile detention facility in South Portland, Maine. Due to the offender’s age, authorities have not disclosed his identity in compliance with state law.

Friends of Stewart described her as an avid outdoor enthusiast who had planned a gathering for the Fourth of July weekend. Rachael Blumenberg, a close friend, noted that upon visiting Stewart’s home, she found the house dark and her dog alone, which raised concerns. The news of the arrest has been met with mixed emotions, as Blumenberg expressed feelings of both relief and sorrow over the loss of her friend.

In the days following Stewart’s death, residents expressed alarm and concern about safety in their typically peaceful community, with some noting that they rarely lock their doors. Kim Ware, Stewart’s sister, shared that Stewart had a vibrant spirit, enjoying activities such as hiking, boating, and paddleboarding. Friends remembered her for her unwavering strength and positive outlook on life, highlighting the impact she had on those around her.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement has remained tight-lipped about specific evidence related to the case. The community is left to grapple with the loss, remembering Stewart’s warmth and spirit, as they await further updates from police. The hope remains that justice will be served as the investigation unfolds.
