A significant advancement is on the horizon for the Bywater neighborhood, as a leading technology firm, Newlab, is set to establish an innovation hub at the long-abandoned Navy base. Governor Jeff Landry made the announcement on Monday in Baton Rouge alongside New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
Newlab’s initiative aims to foster tech start-ups and cultivate advancements specifically in the energy sector. David Bell, cofounder of Newlab, indicated that this collaboration has been years in the making, emphasizing the hub’s potential to deliver critical technology to communities in need. The proposed facility will include laboratories and ample space for companies focused on developing future industrial technologies.
Bell expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are proud to be here and excited for what we can build together.” He noted that Newlab opted for the Bywater site due to its potential for growth and collaboration with local partners.
The area has faced challenges since Hurricane Katrina brought devastation to the region. The Navy base closed in 2005, and operations ceased in 2011, leaving the property vacant and in disrepair. However, this innovation hub marks a turning point for revitalizing the site.
In addition to Newlab’s plans, there is a broader vision for the area that includes the construction of 294 units of affordable housing and 37,000 square feet of retail space, with groundwork expected to commence later this year. This multi-faceted redevelopment effort is poised to breathe new life into the Bywater neighborhood, creating opportunities for residents and businesses alike.
