The International Brotherhood of Teamsters will announce its endorsement decision for the next U.S. President on Wednesday. Recently released membership polling data indicates that both former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden have garnered more support than Vice President Kamala Harris among Teamsters voters.
Currently, the Teamsters have not officially endorsed any candidate. The union’s General Executive Board is set to make a decision soon.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien emphasized that the endorsement process has been the most inclusive and transparent in the organization’s history. “Our members are the union, and their voices and opinions must be at the forefront of everything the Teamsters do,” he stated. O’Brien assured that the final decision regarding the endorsement would reflect the diverse opinions of the membership.
From April 9 to July 3, nearly 300 Teamsters local unions held town halls to gauge endorsement preferences through straw polls, with in-person voting occurring before Biden exited the race. Initial polling data showed Teamsters supported Biden at 44.3 percent compared to Trump’s 36.3 percent.
After the Republican National Convention and Biden’s withdrawal, an independent poll commissioned by the Teamsters showed that from July 24 to September 15, 59.6 percent of members favored endorsing Trump, while 34 percent supported Harris.
Following the recent Democratic National Convention and a presidential debate, the Teamsters enlisted Lake Research Partners to conduct a final survey. The results indicated that 58 percent of Teamsters voted for Trump as their preferred endorsement over Harris’s 31 percent.
The Teamsters General Executive Board will meet in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to review the polling results in anticipation of the endorsement decision.
