Protests against Amazon continued in Queens as the Teamsters union escalated its strike effort, now entering its second day. The union asserts that support for the movement is increasing as workers demand fair treatment from the retail giant. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters emphasized on social media that the Amazon Teamsters movement is “growing bigger and stronger every day.”
This strike, described as the largest organized effort against Amazon to date, involves thousands of workers picketing at facilities across four states. Notably, an Amazon distribution center in Maspeth, Queens, became a focal point for the demonstration, which included nearly 200 participants, including non-Amazon workers, who are advocating for improved benefits, higher wages, and enhanced job security.
Two individuals were arrested on Thursday for disorderly conduct amidst the protests. Jogsyn Cardenas, an Amazon driver, recounts an encounter where he felt unjustly treated during a confrontation between workers and the company. “I was inside the car. I didn’t even get out. They just opened the door for me and grabbed me out of the car,” he stated.
Additionally, another protester, Antonio Rosario from Teamsters Local 804, described his experience during the demonstration, asserting that his rights were being infringed upon as he walked along the picket line.
Supporters of the strike, like driver Emmanuel Trinidad, voiced their frustrations about wage disparities compared to other delivery services such as UPS, which he notes pays its drivers significantly more despite Amazon’s profitability.
In response to the strike, Amazon maintained that operations have not been significantly affected, with a spokesperson noting that most employees continued to work as usual. The protests are fueled by ongoing grievances regarding labor practices, with the National Labor Relations Board reporting numerous unfair labor practice charges filed against Amazon and also addressing some charges against the Teamsters.
Mayor Eric Adams weighed in on the situation, encouraging both parties to engage in constructive negotiations to reach a reasonable agreement regarding economic terms, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in resolving labor disputes.
This ongoing protest highlights a broader movement within the labor sector as workers advocate for better conditions, illustrating a growing awareness regarding worker rights and compensation. The collective action could potentially pave the way for positive changes not only within Amazon but throughout the broader labor market as well.
Overall, as the Teamsters rally support for Amazon workers nationwide, there is a sense of solidarity and determination among the protesters, showcasing the strength of union movements in advocating for fair labor practices.
