The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has chosen not to endorse any candidate in the 2024 presidential race, marking it as the only major U.S. union to withhold support from Vice President Kamala Harris. The union’s leadership indicated a lack of commitments from both Harris and former President Donald Trump on key Teamsters issues, including critical support for the right to strike and non-interference in union matters.
Despite the national Teamsters union’s decision, several regional councils in battleground states like Nevada, Michigan, and Wisconsin expressed their backing for Harris, citing her role in advancing pro-labor legislation such as the Butch Lewis Act, which has helped protect pension benefits for many retirees.
Historically, the Teamsters have endorsed Democratic candidates since 1996, although they have backed Republican candidates like George H.W. Bush in 1988 and Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. The union has emphasized its desire to hear specific commitments on protecting union rights from both political parties, noting that neither candidate guaranteed to avoid governmental interference in strikes.
Harris has indicated her support for legislation that would enhance unionization rights, while Trump has not committed to vetoing “right to work” laws should he become president again. Teamsters President Sean O’Brien emphasized the need for dialogue with potential candidates, stating that the union’s endorsement decision will reflect the members’ diverse opinions.
Following a meeting with Harris, O’Brien reiterated that the Teamsters have conducted polling among members, which initially showed some support for Biden. However, more recent polls indicated a stronger preference for Trump, raising concerns about the national board’s decision not to endorse either candidate.
In response to these developments, Harris’ spokesperson highlighted her commitment to labor issues, while some Teamsters members expressed varying perspectives on party allegiance and labor support. The decision of whether to endorse may play a pivotal role in influencing outcomes in key states during the upcoming election.
