Team USA Edges Out Spain in Paralympics Opener

PARIS — In a rematch of their earlier encounters this summer, Team USA overcame Spain with a score of 66-56 in a tightly contested opening match at the Paralympics held at Bercy Arena on Thursday.

“We’re talking about the best of the best right now,” remarked Team USA’s Trevon Jenifer, acknowledging the competitiveness of both teams. “This is the biggest tournament we have, so we know we’re going to get a team’s best shot. Spain gave us some really strong play for our first game.”

The match began with both teams exchanging baskets, but Team USA quickly gained an edge when Jake Williams hit back-to-back three-pointers, establishing a 10-6 lead within the first four minutes. After a second chance basket from Jennifer, Spain responded with a three-pointer, closing the gap to one point. The first quarter concluded with Team USA leading 18-17.

Williams notably contributed to the team’s performance, scoring eight points, along with two rebounds and two assists in the opening quarter.

The second quarter continued in a similar fashion, with Jenifer scoring early on. Spain briefly took their first lead with 5:25 remaining in the half, but Bell quickly reclaimed it for the U.S. The teams battled closely, with Team USA finishing the half ahead 32-29.

“Spain is an all-world team,” stated Steve Serio, a five-time Paralympian and team captain. “We knew that Spain always brings it. They are not an opponent you can overlook. We have room to grow, but we’ll analyze the game tape and improve.”

In the third quarter, Team USA began to extend their lead, aided by Serio’s and-one play. Despite Spain’s efforts to catch up, Jennifer’s fast break score increased the American lead to eight points, concluding the period at 46-40.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, Spain mounted a late push, narrowing the margin to a single possession with just over six minutes to go. Nevertheless, Team USA held strong to secure the win, finishing at 66-56.

Jake Williams led Team USA with 22 points and seven assists and emphasized this victory is merely the beginning. “Everyone’s excited to get the first game going,” he noted. “We face Spain frequently at these tournaments, so we know what to expect.”

This victory positions Team USA favorably for their upcoming group stage match against the Netherlands, scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
